Imran Khan was in his container and is reportedly injured. The police have allegedly arrested the person responsible.
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was shot and wounded in the leg during a protest march in the eastern city of Wazirabad.
“We tried to kill him,” a senior official told AFP, but police have yet to confirm he was the target.
A member of his PTI party said four more people were injured in the shooting.
Khan, 70, led a march into the capital Islamabad to demand a snap general election after being deported in April.
The former prime minister was taken to a hospital in Lahore. A party spokesman said he was hit in the shin.
Another party leader, state health minister Yasmin Rashid, said Mr Khan was in stable condition.
A male suspect has since been arrested, according to Pakistan’s Geo TV.
After the filming, footage was released showing a conscious Imran Khan being taken away in his car with his right leg bandaged.
In a video shared on social media, his PTI member, with his face bandaged and blood on his clothes, says that Khan and all the injured should pray. Current Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif has condemned the shooting and ordered an immediate investigation.
Khan has led a protest march in the past seven days, the second of its kind this year, calling for new elections.
The government has repeatedly announced that next year’s elections will go ahead as scheduled.
Last month, Pakistan’s electoral commission disqualified Khan from holding public office in an incident he said was politically motivated.
He was accused of misrepresenting gifts from foreign dignitaries and the proceeds from their alleged sales. Presents included Rolex watches, rings and cufflinks.
