While accepting her AFI Life Achievement award, Nicole Kidman said why she never wanted to be a filmmaker: “A director has to make choices, and that’s not my strong suit.”
In her acceptance speech for the AFI Life Achievement Award, Nicole Kidman spent much time thanking the filmmakers with whom she had worked throughout the years. Having said that, she does not intend to suggest that she aspires to work in the film industry.
Nicole Kidman: Embracing the Role of Producer and Championing Talent
I often worry that I wouldn’t be a good director since I have so many ideas all the time. While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday night at the AFI red carpet, Kidman said, “A director has to make choices, and that’s not my strong suit.” She went on to say that her interests would be better served by taking on the role of the producer. My strength is in my ability to cheer on the performers and their abilities. Other times, I’ll read a script and think, “I adore this writing.” Or, when I see a director or performer, I’ll think, “I adore them. How can I support them?” It doesn’t matter if they’ve done nothing in the past; I still want to back them. Doing it brings me joy and keeps me active, therefore I do it because I find it enjoyable. Making other people shine, or at least helping other people do so, is something I really like.
Movies including Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers, The Undoing, Love & Death, Special Ops: Lioness, and Expats were produced by Kidman’s Blossom Films.
Nicole Kidman Champions Emerging Talent at Tribute Show
During the tribute show, the singer went into further detail about her desire to bring attention to others, saying to the crowd of Hollywood inside the Dolby Theatre, “There are so many more exciting young directors and voices that are completely original and need to be heard, and they have a lot to say.” I’m here and ready to get started, so we should give them the opportunity to speak and be heard. I’m here to continuously support those voices. Kidman’s award speech includes a list of her former filmmakers in addition to a personal thank you to each of them.
Nicole Kidman was praised during the event by Miles Teller, Joey King, Mike Myers, Aaron Sorkin, Naomi Watts, Reese Witherspoon, Morgan Freeman, Zoe Saldaña, and husband Keith Urban. Kidman was the 56-year-old youngest recipient of a life achievement award.

“I was like, ‘OK, that’s OK, that’s cool,'” When Kidman discovered that Meryl had received it at the same time, she told THR. But because I enjoy working on the project, feel free to leave, and I’ll take whatever you have to offer.
